International E2 Ecological and Economical wood construction competition

News |
Competition is launched in cooperation with the Finnish Forest Industries Federation, the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, the Finnish Forest Foundation, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation, KSS Energy and the Regional Council of Kymenlaakso.

Registration for the competition has began on 1 September 2010. Participating teams must submit their applications by 22 September. The teams, which will be chosen for the actual competition, will be announced at a 10 am press conference on Tuesday 28 September.

The organisers expect that some participation applications will be submitted by international teams, which are collaborating with Finnish partners.

Winning design to be built in Kuusankoski

At most four design teams will be chosen from among the groups, which register as competition candidates, to participate in the actual design competition.

A reference location based on the winning proposal will be built on the shores of the River Kymi in Kuusankoski, Kouvola.

Finland to spearhead wood construction

The City of Kouvola wants to use the competition to promote the industrial-scale production of new types of wooden multi-storey buildings and its goal to establish a centre of excellence in wood construction. A further objective is the development of new products for wood construction.

The contest is expected to produce energy-efficient and carbon-footprint-reducing solutions for apartment buildings, thus promoting Finland’s effort to become the leading country in wood construction.

Wood use decreases the environmental impacts of construction

Using wood in the manufacture of construction materials reduces atmospheric emissions. As the energy-efficiency of buildings is also improving, the environment-conserving significance of wood construction is emphasised further.

Jukka Noponen, who is in charge of Sitra’s Energy Programme, says that this wood construction competition represents an important opening through which sustainable building activity will expand both in Finland and internationally. Sitra is one of the financial backers of the competition.
