Finnish Forest Industries Federation influences the drafting of legislation and keeps members informed about current developments. The federation also promotes the exchange of information on occupational health and safety issues between members,  the federation and other countries.

An occupational health and safety group, within the Finnish Forest Industries Federation, is responsible for promoting health and safety issues. It comprises representatives from member companies and the federation.

Occupational safety can be defined in several ways. Most companies consider that the concept encompasses:

  • The prevention of workplace accidents and occupational diseases
  • The development of the working environment
  • Managing absences due to illness
  • Activities aimed at supporting employees' ability to work

Absences attributable to illness cause significant losses in the Finnish forest industries and their costs are increasing even though they are already higher than in competing countries. Despite the positive developments in recent years, the number of workplace accidents in the sector is likewise higher than in other countries.
