Forest industry improving its energy efficiency

The forest industry’s annual energy bill amounts to about one billion euro. Constant improvements in the energy efficiency is a key objective for the industry. The State should continue to provide incentives for the improvement of energy-efficiency.
Energy-inefficiency not a viable option

The forest industry has a natural need to utilise energy efficiently because its annual energy expenses amount to around €1 billion. The more efficiently energy is used, the more significant the cost savings achieved. In future, environmental concerns as well as the rising trend in energy prices will continue to spur efficiency.

The forest industry’s production volumes have grown at a faster pace than its energy consumption. The industry will continue to aim to manufacture its products by consuming as little energy as possible.

Efficiency also promoted through agreements

Energy efficiency agreements between the state and the business sector have proved to be an excellent means of promoting energy-efficiency in companies. All of the pulp-and paper-manufacturing member companies have signed up to the agreement. Also the majority of wood product industry in participating the agreement.

Under the terms of the agreement, companies examine potential ways to increase the efficiency of their energy use and manufacturing processes as well as draft and implement savings plans. Participating companies have also committed to monitoring their energy-efficiency on a continuous basis as well as to the adoption of new, energy-efficient technologies as their means allow.
