Economic responsibility

The forest-based sector's key economic effects are visible across the entire national economy because of the major multiplier effects of the sector.
Purchases of wood, energy and other domestic production inputs as well as of transport services create substantial economic impacts.

Recyclable products from domestic timber

The forest industry is the biggest buyer of domestic timber. The value of forests is created mostly through wood processing, which, in the entire value chain, brings jobs and prosperity to various parts of Finland. The second-largest raw-material flow of the forest industry comes from chemicals.

More domestic inputs than other branches

The forest-based sector uses relatively more domestic production inputs than other industrial branches, and this adds to its significance for the national economy. If sufficient amounts of raw materials and energy are available in Finland at a competitive price, the forest industry’s domestic operating prerequisites will strengthen.

Large producer of renewable energy

The forest industry produces the greater part of the renewable energy, which is consumed in Finland, in conjunction with its manufacturing operations. Achievement of Finland’s renewable energy targets calls for business, climate and energy policies that promote the operating prerequisites of the forest industry.
