Forest residues are a cost-efficient and ecologically friendly raw material in the production of biofuels. Forest residues consist for example branches and tree tops.
By promoting the diverse use of wood, climate goals are reached in several different ways. Products manufactured from wood storage carbon dioxide and can substitute products manufactured from non-renewable and fossil raw materials.
Products and energy in a sustainable way
The European commission is outlining criteria for sustainable energy production from biomass. Europe’s established criteria for sustainable forestry should be approved as sufficient when assessing the sustainability of forest biomass.
Existing methods for sustainable forestry are constantly being developed, which serves both wood processing as well as the use of wood for energy.
The utilisation of forest residues in producing energy differs to its advantage from many other biomasses. The use of forest residue does not require land use change or compete with food production.
